Updated Classic Christmas Decor

When you think of classic Christmas, you probably picture Bing Crosby on the record player while children string popcorn around the Christmas tree by the fire. Here are some ideas on how to update the classic Christmas décor and make it shiny and new again.

Popcorn Strands

Classic popcorn strands are lovely, but not really the most appealing Christmas decoration to string around your tree. It can also prove to be a problem if you have pets in your home when they decide it is a delicious snack instead of a decoration. A new take on this old favorite is to use beads instead. You can find festive-colored glass beads at any craft store. This updated look will really make your Christmas tree shine.

Update Your Palette

Sometimes all you need to update the classics is a small tweak. Instead of using classic red, white, green, and gold, go for something a bit more updated, like pink, blue, or purple. You don’t have to go all out and deck your house out in hot pink, but adding a small accent color really makes a difference. Incorporate some blue ribbons into your tree or add a couple of blue baubles to your wreath. These small changes can make a big difference.

Update Your Lights

Traditional Christmas lights were shaped like candles, bubbling, or were big and bulky. If you want to really update your Christmas décor, go for LED Christmas lights. The new trend is to mix and match lights, using different sizes on each strand. This gives your tree the illusion of sparkling all the time. This is helpful if you’re using an artificial Christmas tree because it makes it look even more authentic. Even the best artificial Christmas trees can’t compare to the real thing, but this trick really works magic.

Add A Little Sparkle

What makes something feel newer than adding glitz or sparkles? Update any of your traditional Christmas décor by adding a coat of glitter. This is a great kid craft idea for Christmas. Buy a traditional nutcracker or reindeer, go outside, and coat it in glitter spray paint. You can also do this to old bottles or wreaths. It makes for a very glamorous Christmas.

Use Marshmallows

Yes, marshmallows. String marshmallows on a fishing line above your mantle to create the look of big, fat snowflakes. If you use enough, you’ll have a gorgeous snowy backdrop that is sure to add a touch of holiday flair to any room. Place a mirror behind your marshmallow curtain for an even better effect.
