What Is Roku And Do You Need It?

Have you ever wanted to have an Internet connection to your television, but you don’t want to spend the big bucks on a smart TV? Here are some need-to-know facts about the Roku and its different models and capabilities to help you make a decision.

What Is It?

The Roku is a set-top box that channels the Internet into your television. There are four different versions available and they include the streaming stick, and the Roku 1, Roku 2, and Roku 3. Each Roku plugs directly into your TV and connects to your Internet service at your home. (You must have high-speed Internet in your home to access Roku’s services.) Once you’ve connected to your network, you can stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, access YouTube, or any other streaming apps that are available on the Roku system. If you buy the Roku 3, which is the most expensive device, you can also play games.

How Much Does It Cost?

The different versions of the Roku vary from $49.99 to $99.99. There is no monthly subscription fee, but you may have to make in-app purchases to view certain videos. For example, if you want to watch Netflix, you will need a current Netflix subscription in order to sign on and watch the instant shows and movies Netflix has to offer. Roku states that you choose what you want to pay for and what you don’t want to pay for.

Which Roku Is Right For Me?

If you don’t have an HDTV, go ahead and ignore the Streaming Stick and the Roku 3 because they both require an HDTV. All of the Roku models offer over 1,000 entertainment channels, built-in wireless, Roku Search across top channels, control with the included remote or with your mobile device, and the ability to send videos, photos, and music from your smart phone to your television. The Roku 2 and 3 come with a remote headphone jack to listen via headphones. The Roku 3 includes a five times faster processor and motion control for games.

Where Can I Buy It?

You can order any model online and take advantage of the free shipping option, or you can buy one at your local electronic big box store. They are also sold at most Wal-Mart’s, Costco’s, Targets, and Sam’s Clubs.
