Finding Personal Time as a Stay-At-Home Parent

Stay at home parents rarely get the credit that they deserve. The job is around the clock and there are no breaks, weekends off, or paid personal days. Whether you are a stay at home parent to younger children, who require constant attention, or school-aged children who need homework help or personal chauffeur services, the job is never done. Between taking care of the children and managing the house, it is far too easy to neglect yourself. It is crucial that you find a little "me time" here and there to unwind and and lessen some of the stress of a hectic day to day.

Importance of a Sleep Routine

Essential to finding daily me time is a healthy sleep routine. Making sure the children get to bed on time each night will ensure that you have a few hours of time to yourself. Chores can always wait, so be sure to utilize some of this time to take a bubble bath, read a good book, or catch up on some of your favorite shows. This is also the same for nap time. Making sure that your children stay on a normal schedule each day will ensure that you get those few hours of alone time. Good sleepers lead to a less frazzled, much happier mom.

It's OK to Ask for Help

One thing that most stay at home moms are guilty of is failing to ask for help. A little personal time to yourself in critical for being able to manage such a crazy schedule. There is no shame in asking someone to watch your children or take them out for a few hours so you can get a pedicure, go shopping alone, or grab some lunch with a friend. Whether it is a grandparent, your spouse, or a friend, you will most likely find people will be more than willing to give you a break. You could even trade off with a friend who also has kids. They can watch your kids for a few hours while you get away, and you can return the favor at another time.

Unique Suggestions

There are several other routes to some time for yourself. Obtain a gym membership with a day care. The children can play for an hour or so a couple days a week while you squeeze in a workout. Exercise will allow you to destress while the adrenaline gives you some much needed energy. You could also start a small savings jar and drop a few dollars in every once in a while. Use this money to hire a sitter for a few hours a couple times a month so you can get away. No matter which route you take or how often you do it, make sure you do not neglect yourself.

Everyone needs a few moments from time to time to relax and recharge. Despite the long hours and craziness of it all, being a stay at home mom can be the most rewarding of careers if you just remember to carve out a little me time.
