How to Get Over a Breakup

Moving on after a breakup isn’t an exact science, and it’s completely different for every person and failed relationship. Sometimes you need ice cream, an insanely depressing movie, and three days to suffer alone in your rattiest sweats. And then other times you need a big helping of angry revenge.

  1. Ask him to buy a plane ticket to come see you...then tell him you never want to see him again.
Cassie, 23, didn’t intend to cause her ex boyfriend, Jared, to lose 200 bucks, but she was kind of glad she did. When the relationship was on the downhill slope Cassie ended it, but Jared offered to fly to see her and hopefully get back together. Cassie agreed at first, but changed her mind and told him to forget it the next day. He had a few choice things to say, but she got a sweet feeling of satisfaction from his financial duress.

  2. Start dating a friend or coworker of his.
Dating someone else quickly after a breakup can seem insensitive, but sometimes it’s the best way to not only stick it to ‘em, but also seem as if you’re totally 100% over that jerk (even if you’re not). For Samantha, 21, it was the best way to get over her recent ex, Max, who chose to break up with her via text while she was on vacation with her parents. The next week, Samantha showed up to a frat party with one of Max’s fraternity brothers, and the look on his face definitely made Samantha feel avenged.

  3. Key his car with a nasty word.
When Ryan, 22, broke up with Emma, she made a bold move for revenge. For her the best way to get over their break up was by keying his car, but not by simply putting scratches into it. Instead, she received much more of the needed release of anger by keying the word rapist into his car. And no, he did not rape her or anyone else.

  4. Call his new girl an ugly heifer and make sure she hears.
Stacy, 23, was pretty pissed off when her ex-kind-of-beau, who ended things because his dad was in bad health and he wanted to “focus on his family”, showed up to a gathering of friends the following weekend with his on-again-off-again girlfriend from high school. This insult particularly stung for Stacy because “he assured [her] that he hadn’t spoken to [his high school girlfriend] in a year.” In a spur-of-the-moment bash session with her girlfriends in the bar bathroom, Stacy expressed how she felt, which was that the new girl was an ugly heifer. To which her friends vehemently and loudly agreed. Turns out the new/old chick was in a stall 5 feet away and heard every word. Did Stacy feel bad? “Not really.”

  5. Break up on Christmas and return everything he ever gave you as a present.
Melissa, 19, was done with the relationship and didn’t see the point in putting off the official split until the holidays were over so she went ahead and called it off on Christmas Day. Her present to him was a box full of all the gifts, t shirts, love notes, and one very special Build-a-Bear he’d given her. Was it harsh? Maybe, but he deserved it for ignoring her for two weeks and ruining her Christmas break.
