Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

Valentine’s Day gifts are hard to pick out, and you need to make sure you consider your relationship stage before going shopping. Here is the complete gift guide to help you decide what gifts are appropriate for each stage of your relationship so you can make sure to choose the perfect gift this holiday season for your significant other.

Just Dating

If you and your significant other have just started dating (less than three months), it’s best to keep the gifts simple and sweet. This is still a new and fragile relationship, so it’s best not to go overboard. Steer clear of jewelry, especially rings. The stereotypical “flowers and chocolates” gift is your safest bet in this situation to keep things sweet, but not too serious. It shows that you care, but it doesn’t push your relationship into unknown territory that you may or may not be ready for. Keep things less serious so you don’t end up sending the wrong message to the person you’re dating, just in case the relationship doesn’t end up being the real deal.

A Little More Serious

If you’ve been seeing one another exclusively for around a year or so, it’s time to up the ante. This Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to surprise your love with something special. Jewelry, flowers, and a nice dinner out is a great Valentine’s Day gift for couples that have been together for over a year. If jewelry isn’t really your thing, it’s also appropriate to get your significant other something he or she has really been wanting. It’s totally okay to get him a pair of cool shoes, or get her a certificate for a massage or a pedicure. These are gifts that are appreciated and you should be comfortable enough at this point with each other to be able to deviate from the typical Valentine’s Day plan.

Married Couples

When you and your spouse have been together for quite awhile, Valentine’s Day can seem routine. Gifts can be hard to think of since you’ve spent so many holidays together. However, this is the time of year to try to surprise your spouse and get him or her something really special. Don’t get the regular old flowers and chocolates. Try to get something that is catered to his or her individual wants or needs. If your spouse likes to paint, get her a new set of paintbrushes and an easel with a sweet note about how you love her creativity. Put the spark back into your marriage and remind your spouse why you love him or her and why you are happy to be married.
