Tousled Beach Waves
Tousled waves are one of the easiest hairstyles to master, especially if your hair already has a natural wave. Most women love this hairstyle because it’s versatile and universally flattering.
Beach waves can be created with or without heat, depending on your hair type. Beauty gurus have made countless tutorials if you need a little extra help mastering this summery look.
Short Bobs
If you have short hair or are wanting a change, try rocking a short bob. This hairstyle can be blunt or it can be layered, it’s entirely up to you. No matter what you choose, it will be perfect for summer.
It keeps your hair looking light and breezy, which is just what you want when the weather begins to warm up.
Loose Braids
There’s no question that braids are one of the most popular summer hairstyles. As a child, you may remember your mother braiding your hair prior to long days at the pool or beach.
As an adult, you can still do the same thing. But instead of pulling your hair into a tight braid, allow yourself to look a little messier than normal. Loose braids are a laid back alternative to your regular hairstyle.
Low Buns
If you haven’t accepted the low-bun trend yet, what are you waiting for? It’s perfect for those with long, lengthy locks. And, it’s something other than a repetitive ponytail.
The low bun transitions perfectly from the office, to happy hour with friends, to movie night at home with your S.O. So, no matter where you’re at or what you’re doing, it’s always a good time to rock a low bun.
Braided Ponytails
While traditional braids are fun for the summer months, so are braided ponytails. If you need inspiration, look no further than Blake Lively. She wears this hairstyle on a regular basis—and you should too.
All you have to do is slick your hair into a high ponytail and then loosely braid your hair down your back. Once finished, tie it off at the end.
Curly Updos
This hairstyle is for women with curls. Everyone knows curly hair can be unruly and unpredictable. Because of this, it’s nice to have a go-to curly updo you can wear if needed.
And because the summer months are hot and humid, it’s the ideal time to find your signature curly updo. Experiment with your hair and find what works best for your hair. Once you figure it out, keep a hair tie with you at all times.
High Ponytails
Yes, summer weather can be unbearable—especially if you live somewhere with extremely hot temperatures. During this type of heat, you’ll want to get your hair off the nape of your neck. One of the easiest ways to do this is to put your hair into a high ponytail.
If you have thin hair and want to fake volume and body, use the bobby pin trick. All you have to do is place two bobby pins vertically into the underside of your ponytail. You’ll instantly notice more height and volume.
Statement Accessories
This summer is all about statement hair accessories. What celebrities and beauty influencers are loving most at the moment are headbands and hair clips.
Thick, velvet headbands and patterned, linen headbands are extremely trendy right now. If you aren’t sure about headbands, try easing into the hair accessory trend by wearing a pearl or rhinestone hair clip.
Unconventional Braids
This is a diverse and individualized hairstyle. Non-conventional braids can be done in countless ways. If you’re wanting to give yourself texture, create small, thin braids in your hair.
They can be at the crown of your head, at the part of your hair, or braided all the way to the ends of your hair. Find what works best for you and go for it!
Curled Baby Hairs
This hairstyle is inspired by lots of celebrities and beauty influencers. Although it requires more time and effort to create than the majority of these summer styles, it looks so chic.
To do this, it’s likely that you’ll want to first put your hair into a slicked-back style—like a low bun or high ponytail. You’ll leave a few baby hairs down near your face and secure them using a hair gel or hairspray with hold.
Effortless Ponytails
Your stereotypical ponytails start looking tired after a while, which is why it’s so important to change it up every now and then. An effortless ponytail is even easier than a regular ponytail.
All you have to do is loosely tie your hair back, leaving a few strands framing your face. It truly looks (and is) effortless!
Layered Shags
It’s likely you’ll remember shag haircuts from the 1970s—and if you don’t remember them, it’s time you find out why they’re making a comeback. These layered cuts are so summery.
They add texture, depth, and volume to hair, giving you exactly what you want and need during the warm summer months. And the best part about this hairstyle, it looks perfect on both short and long hair.
Flatiron Waves
If you’re wanting waves that look different from your curling iron curls, or if you aren’t satisfied with your natural waves, use your flatiron to get the hair of your dreams. I know, it sounds counterintuitive, but it works.
Your flatiron can do so much more than just straighten your hair. All you have to do is take a section of your hair at a time and twist your wrist away from your face as you straighten to create bouncy, beachy waves.
Curtain Bangs
While not all bangs are universally flattering, curtain bangs are. They look lovely on everyone—literally. If you think you can’t pull them off, you’re wrong. These shaggy bangs frame your face and leave you looking like a ‘70s celebrity.
What’s so great about them is that they’re long enough to pin back if you want them out of your face. Whether your hair is short, long, curly, wavy, or straight, you can totally rock these bangs.
Low Ponytails
Just like low buns, low ponytails are also in for summer. If you wear them low, slicked back, and parted down the middle, you’ll look so glam. This hairstyle will save the day on mornings when you’re running late or in dire need of dry shampoo.
If you want to dress this hairstyle up, take a strand of hair from your ponytail, wrap it around your hair tie to hide it, and fasten it with pins.
Hair Scarves
Love it or hate it, the hair scarves are here to stay. This year, stylists are pairing them with messy braids, middle parts, bangs, and widely curly hair. Let's jump into why and how this style is so successful, and you probably already know the first reason: the '70s. Surprised? Probably not. But the trend definitely didn't start there. Scarves have been used by people around the world to protect their hair from the elements as well as for religious reasons or social conventions.
The awesome part about hair scarves is that they don't require any heating tools, which further protect your hair from damage and is a great way to give your locks a bit of a break if you use heating tools the rest of the week. Some people prefer to make trendy turbans out of their scarves or are more low-key with their hair accessories by tying a bandana around their head.
Vintage Pixie
If you're bold enough, make the big chop this summer and rock the iconic pixie cut that Twiggy, Mia Farrow, Winona Ryder, and Halle Berry have worn before you. According to Farrow, she cut her own hair with a pair of fingernail scissors and even declined a trim from Vidal Sassoon himself for a photo shoot. As for Twiggy, her ultra-short pixie-cut hair set her modeling career apart from the rest of the cookie-cutter models in the 1960s.
Not only is the pixie cut trendy, but it's empowering and freeing! There's no better feeling for the breezy summer months. It's safe to say that pixies are totally back! Whether you choose to chop it off or do a little "sneaky sneaky" and pin your hair back, pixies are all the rage. This look is all about low maintenance that can work out for literally anyone. Also, you use a lot less product in the morning. In this economy, that's priceless.
Babylights
Like traditional yellow stripy highlights on copper hair, gold babylights can serve the same purpose of creating depth and shine on any hair color. Typically used to make brown or blonde hair pop, a subtle golden sheen complements the skin and shines in the light. Try it out on blonde, too!
The awesome part about babylights is that they can be as bold or as subtle as you want. We'd recommend bold babylights in the summer when you want to give your hair that extra sun-kissed look. But even into the fall, winter, and spring, super soft highlights will keep you looking vibrant without being too distracting.
The Farrah Fawcett
There’s no denying the fact that “Charlie’s Angels” star Farrah Fawcett was a fashion and beauty icon. Although her acting made her famous, she’s often remembered for her loose and abundant hair. She was the definition of femininity and sexuality during the 1970s. We'd definitely take style advice from her!
Her hairstyle inspired — and continues to inspire — women in every season, but we think that this summer is the best time to really rock the big and bouncy look. Her stylist kept the layers around her face short, her hair on top flat, and the edges of hair flipped out. Her feathered waves required mousse, a curling iron, and lots of hairspray.
Cornrows & Box Braids
Cornrows are a traditional hairstyle defined by making underhand, upward motions to make rows of hair braided closely to the scalp. Most of these styles are done in straight lines but they can be manipulated into elaborate designs, including geometric shapes and curves, which is why it’s one of the most popular protective styles.
Weaving cornrows can take upward of five hours, but are made up by its low maintenance once completed. As long as you care for your hair properly by keeping your scalp moisturized, you can leave cornrows in your hair for up to eight weeks. Braiding hair may not increase the rate at which your hair grows, but they are a good option for short-haired women to start the process of growing out their hair.
Afro Puffs
You may know space buns as a festival hairstyle, but they actually have a long history aside from undercuts and glitter. Inspired by 20th-century Mexican revolutionaries called soldaderas, Native American Hopi “squash blossom buns,” and ‘70s “Afro puffs,” Princess Leia was not the first lady to popularize this hairstyle.
All this style takes is splitting your hair down the middle and forming two buns on the side of your head. Star Wars chose to slap them on the side of Carrie Fisher’s head, but modern women prefer them on the top for added volume and an elongated appearance.
Wispy Bangs
Another French-inspired trend, wispy bangs give any hairstyle personality without bogging you down in the heat. If you’re wanting to jump on the bangs trend but have a slight fear of commitment, these thin bangs are a low commitment that can be pinned back at a moment’s notice with adorable on-trend accessories.
"Remember... feathered hairstyles? Well, feathered bangs were also a popular look in the ‘70s. These wispy bangs are the perfect option for those who aren’t brave enough to try out blunt, straight-across bangs but still want to hop on the bang bandwagon," writes L'Oreal Paris USA.
Curly Bob
No one puts Baby (or her hair) in a corner! If you loved this look on the big screen, you can proudly rock the messy natural curls and bangs this year. The best thing about this hairstyle is that it looks great almost right out of the bed. Sure, you might have to do a little de-frizzing, but other than that? You're good to go.
Another thing? This style looks amazing when you choose a dynamic hair color. A balayage or an ombre will really make this cut pop. It also looks fantastic with solid shades, especially if you can get a lot of shine out of your hair! The shine will make it look consistently bouncy.
"Wet" Look
It used to be taboo to step outside your house with wet hair, but that idea is quickly changing. Hair that is slightly wet or is made to look wet can be just as sexy as completely dry hair (maybe even more so!) Celebrities and models have made many red-carpet and runway appearances with hair that looks to be sopping wet. Recently, Zendaya wore it at the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In reality, this hairstyle requires much more than water if you want it to stay "wet" all day, which usually means heaps of gel. If you're not scared of using an egregious amount of hair product, this is the adventurous summertime hairstyle for you!
Flipped Ends
It all started with a bobbed haircut, but instead of wearing it as a blunt bob, women in the '90s would use a straightener and hairspray to flip the ends of their hair outward. While there are many renditions of this hairstyle today, Drew Berrymore’s ‘90s rendition of the flipped-out bob is unforgettable.
In order to really pull this off, all you needed was a layered bob, a hair straightener, and hairspray. Once styled, this look was extremely versatile. During 2004, you’d see this flipped-out hairstyle in every issue of your favorite fashion and style magazine. This summer is the perfect time to bring it back!
Pigtails
Don't cringe just yet! We know many young girls were forced to wear pigtails (and hated them), but we think you s should give them a second chance. Britney Spears wore pigtails, as well as the Spice Girls. Why not follow suit? And if you really want to be trendy, wear ribbons, scrunchies, or other hair accessories around your pigtails.
Pigtails in adulthoodn are massively underrated, in our humble opinion. Ladies with pixie cuts can’t relate, yet the cutest hairdo for short hair you can pull out in a moment’s notice are tiny tails. Trust us, pairing this style with a dress and flats is the epitome of adorable.
'90s Butterfly Clips
Do you remember when we said that the ‘90s were coming back? Yeah, we literally mean that. Hair accessories are also coming back with a vengeance. Thankfully, that doesn’t mean butterfly clips are going to be reintroduced. You’ll be hard-pressed to see us wearing those monstrosities again. Instead, we mean hair clips.
You’ll notice there are a few updates. Hair barrettes have gotten larger – much larger. Now, some are big enough to cover the entire back of your head! Some still roll with the smaller ones but add three to five to create a little design. At the same time, butterfly clips are back and definitely the most adorable choice for styling those pesky baby hairs!
Half-up, Half-Down Bun
When you can’t decide if you want to wear your hair up or down, your best bet is to wear it in a sleek half-updo. This style is easy to execute and is a perfect choice for those mornings when you only have five minutes to style your hair.
Trade your high, messy bun for the more refined half-up bun. It's low effort, easy to do, and way less damaging to your hair at the end of the day. To keep it from being too '90s (as if that's a bad thing), pull just the top half of your hair back and loop it casually. Or you could even add some gel and spikes for added nostalgia.
Milkmaid Braid
Braids are traveling farther upwards as women everywhere require their hair out of their face in order to concentrate on working from home. The wrap-around and milkmaid braids are both practical for work and professional for online meetings. Plus, it’s just one step past a normal braid just with a few more bobby pins, so it doesn’t take up any more time than it needs to!
Plus, as the world opens up, these braids can serve a dual purpose as a practical WFH hairstyle and a cute night on the town style after you finally muster up the energy to step out of the house and learn how to be social again. As you become more comfortable with the style, throw in a few accessories like a hair scarf or clip-in flowers for added beauty.
Debby Harry Two-Toned Hair
The '90s era "money piece" hair color trend is back in full force thanks to social media influencers, primarily teenagers on TikTok who are using the platform to revive trends of the past back into the mainstream. "Money pieces" are highlighted sections of hair at the front of your head used for face-framing and adding dimension to your look.
Teenagers love making their money pieces bright neon colors to stand out among the crowds of students in high school but adults prefer to make their two-toned hair more refined for the workplace. Rather than resorting to heavy bleach, most professional women choose to lighten their hair only two or three shades for subtle face-framing highlights.
