Denim That Fits Just Right
It may seem more economical to purchase a $45 pair of jeans rather than a $100 pair of jeans, but I’ll let you know firsthand that the latter will last much longer. Most women wear denim jeans on the regular—meaning a pair of more expensive denim will pay for itself in a matter of weeks. I especially recommend splurging on denim if you’re done growing.
A Warm Winter Coat
There’s nothing more essential than a cozy winter coat—especially if you live somewhere with colder temperatures. Unfortunately, a well-made coat usually costs a little more than anyone would really like to pay. But here’s the deal—if you splurge on a thick and luxurious coat now, it will last you years. Just take proper care of it and it will be worth what you paid!
A Structured Blazer
This recommendations is for all the women that follow a business-casual dress code—or for the ones who just want to dress like a #girlboss. Blazers are the newest wardrobe staple. Many celebs have been seen dressing them up and down in recent years. That being said, you definitely want to keep a structured blazer (or two) on hand. Wear it to work with trousers, a lacey camisole, and pumps, or to dinner with friends with a graphic tee, shorts, and sneakers. Either way, it’s sure to make a statement.
A Cashmere Sweater
Nothing says luxury like a cashmere sweater. The fabric is heavenly. The comfort is extreme. No other sweater material can compare! It only makes sense that this item is a splurge. You can fill your wardrobe with other inexpensive sweaters, but there should always be room for at least one cashmere piece. It’s a purchase you won’t regret.
A Nice Pair of Boots
Because of the numerous blisters I’ve endured from inexpensive shoes, I always choose to splurge on my footwear. That being said, I know not everyone will agree. I can understand not paying extra for a pair of summer sandals, but I feel you should absolutely pay a little extra for a nice pair of boots. These will mostly likely be worn through fall and winter and into spring. A trendy pair of black boots will go with literally anything—making them a must-have.
A Leather Jacket
Layering is one of the easiest ways to customize and reinvent outfits. For example, I love transitioning my go-to office outfit (black denim, heels, blouse, and blazer) into an evening outfit by swapping my blazer for my leather jacket. My leather jacket is my best friend. If you have one, you probably feel the same. Although they’re a splurge, they’ll last you a decade or longer, especially if cared for correctly!
A Trendy Bag
I’m guilty of buying a new bag, backpack, or purse every single time I go to my local TJ Maxx. It’s not something I’m proud of. Recently though, I splurged on a structured bag. Yes, it cost more than my typical TJ Maxx finds, but I’m learning it’s about quality, not quantity. This new bag will last me forever. When finding a bag to splurge on, make sure you find one you absolutely love—because you’ll have it for years to come.
A Stylish Clutch
While it’s important to splurge on a bag that you will use daily, it’s also important to splurge on a clutch that you will use on occasion. Think of the weddings, galas, and events you attend in a year's time. Instead of forcing your significant other to carry your phone, wallet, keys, and lipgloss, purchase a trendy clutch—preferably a neutral one. This will ensure that your clutch matches all of your outfits!
A Little Black Dress
Ah, the #LBD. It seems as though the little black dress is one of the few wardrobe essentials that never goes out of style. This is because it can be dressed up or down. It’s one of the more dependable fashion pieces. And if you’re willing to splurge on it, it’ll last longer.
A White Tee
Yes, a white tee—I said it. As strange as it sounds, splurging on a nice white tee is the adult thing to do. It’s time to toss your stretched out, discolored, and poorly made white v-neck. Spending a little more on a white tee that’s a better quality will change your world. You’ll actually feel okay to wear it underneath cardigans, blazers, and jackets. It will make every outfit look more put together.
A High-Quality Swimsuit
I’m the first to admit I’m all about an affordable swimsuit from Target. They’re cute and inexpensive. Unfortunately, they rarely last for more than one season. That’s why I recommend investing in a swimsuit that’s made with quality in mind. If you’re willing to splurge, you’ll have a swimsuit that’s made of a thicker and more durable material. And you can bet it’ll last for multiple summers.
A Pair of Black Leggings
Ah, there’s nothing better than a pair of comfortable black leggings. They are the most dependable of clothing pieces and can be worn at home and/or on-the-go. The trick is to invest in leggings that actually fit your body. We all know how annoying it is to wear leggings that are saggy and loose, which is why I recommend spending a little more for leggings that are quality. You’ll never regret this purchase.
A Pair of Shades
The best thing you’ll ever do for yourself is purchase a nice pair of sunglasses. I say this knowing you’ll agree. This is because more expensive sunglasses are made with better lenses. Not only will the frames be more flattering, but the lenses will block sun more efficiently. A trendy pair of sunglasses can be worn through all seasons.
Timeless Jewelry Pieces
Accessorizing isn’t easy. It’s hard to know what jewelry to splurge on and what jewelry to pass up on when shopping. As I’ve gotten older, I realized why so many women wear statement jewelry pieces—it’s classy. I totally recommend investing in a necklace, bracelet, and ring that you love. These are pieces you can wear every single day.
A Cozy Cardigan
One of the most versatile clothing pieces is the cardigan. It’s cozy, comfortable, and perfect for summer, winter, spring, and fall. I’m all for a nice cardigan. Most women own many inexpensive cardigans, myself included— but I do have two pricier cardigans that have lasted me years. I splurged on them both more than five years ago and I still wear them regularly! Totally worth the money.
A Pair of Pumps
There will—without a doubt—always be an occasion that requires a pair of pumps. And because this is the case, they’re worth the extra cost up front. A sleek pair of heels will be worn time and time again, rather than just taking up space in the back of your closet. If you’re really willing to pay the upfront cost, purchase a pair in both black and tan so you’ll have a pair to wear with any outfit.
A Classic Button-Down
There’s nothing better than a crisp button-down shirt. I believe this is an item that deserves to be splurged on. I say this because of how frequently they can be worn. They’re just as cute with denim shorts and platform sneakers as they are with tie-waist trousers and heels!
A Comfortable Pair of Sneakers
It may seem self-explanatory, but spending a little extra on a pair of sneakers is so worth it. They’ll fit your feet better, provide you with more comfort, and will last significantly longer. If you’re in the market for new tennis shoes, go to a shoe store and have your feet fitted for shoes that are just right for you.
A Dressy Jumpsuit
While the majority of fashion staples on this list are items you can wear every single day, a dressy jumpsuit is something you won’t wear every single day—but you’ll still get your use out of. Like the iconic little black dress, a stylish and fitted jumpsuit is perfect for any event. Keep it in your closet for fancier occasions so you aren’t tempted to run out and buy another dress or jumpsuit that you’ll only wear once or twice.
Cold-Weather Gear
I’ll be honest, splurging on cold-weather gear is one of the most controversial fashion suggestions. From experience, my pricier gloves, scarves, and winter hats have kept me warmer than my inexpensive cold-weather gear. That being said, it’s totally up to your discretion. If you feel you won’t get adequate use out of these pieces, definitely don’t splurge—but if you feel you will, I recommend it!
A Patterned Blouse
Blouses are a must-have. I recommend buying at least one to keep in your wardrobe rotation. If you purchase a blouse that’s well-made, it will last years. My favorite blouses are those with bold patterns and flattering shapes. They look especially lovely with black trousers and dark-wash denim.
A Dainty Wrap Dress
Every woman should invest in a dainty wrap dress. The beauty of these dresses is that they’re flattering on all body shapes. They accentuate the waist and bust, hide any and all trouble areas, and create curves. The ultra-slimming style is perfect for a day at the office, an evening with friends, or a date night with your boo.
A Classic Denim Jacket
One of the easiest ways to update your outfits is by adding an extra layer. Like leather jackets, denim jackets are another necessary fashion staple. There are so many ways to wear and style denim, especially denim jackets. They can be worn with graphic tees, over dresses, tied around the waist, and so many other ways.
A Knee-Length Skirt
Knee-length skirts never go out of style—and I mean that. They are timeless. They’re totally business-chic and a must-have for the office. Not only will you feel your best in a trendy knee-length skirt, but you’ll also look your best. They’re a staple for all business-professional women.
A Pair of Ballet Flats
I’m convinced there’s nothing better than a chic pair of ballet flats. They’re the best alternative to high heels or pumps because—let’s be honest—they’re way more comfortable. I have a pair in black and tan so that I always have a practical, yet sophisticated shoe option!
A Pair of Tailored Shorts
We all have a go-to pair of denim shorts—and we love them—but it’s important to also have a nice pair of tailored shorts that you can wear and dress up, if needed. Tailored shorts are usually longer than denim shorts and made of a nicer material. You’ll be happy to have these to wear on more than one occasion.
An Oversized Graphic Tee
I always recommend buying graphic tees in one size larger than you normally would wear. I say this because oversized tees can be dressed up or down. They can be tucked in and styled, or they can be tied up and worn slouchy. Both looks are fun and trendy, depending on the occasion. They’re typically pricey, but worth the money!
A Turtleneck Sweater
Turtleneck sweaters are a controversial closet staple. I absolutely think every woman should keep a white and black fitted turtleneck in her wardrobe. If you don’t like the feeling of wearing a turtleneck, purchase a nice long-sleeved tee instead. Splurging on a turtleneck or long-sleeved tee that fits just right will be the best decision you’ve ever made.
A Bra That Actually Fits
You may not think that your intimates matter because they’re not seen, you’re wrong. Investing in and wearing a bra that actually fits will change your life—maybe not literally...but figuratively. You’ll feel better and your clothes will look better. It’s time to toss your cheap and chintzy undergarments.
A Black Leather Belt
Instead of going through five or more inexpensive belts per year, splurge on one nice leather belt. It will last for multiple years and be an investment you won’t regret. You’ll be able to wear it weekly without worry of it tearing or breaking.
