Long Cardigans
Too warm for a coat and too cold for bare arms? Cardigans are the solution. Long cardigans are perfect for fall weather. We’re talking about ones that go past your hips, and sometimes even further! They’re warm and comfy. It's like wearing a stylish Snuggie.
They are light enough not to be too warm but add an extra layer that takes the chill off. In warmer areas of the country, you could probably get away with wearing one through the winter months as well. Either way, it's a great investment, to be sure.
'90s Revival
We're going back to the '90s this fall, and we're loving it! Overalls, coordinating sets, tracksuits, and quirky statement fashions are back. So, dig out that vintage Gucci and rock it like it's 1999. You can wear your mom jeans and windbreakers with pride. It's not every day that period fashion is in, so enjoy this trend while it lasts.
Some fashion inspirations for this era are Courtney Love, Jewel, Clueless, and Naomi Campbell. Now's the time to wear a bright color and own whatever room you walk into. If you're willing to fully commit to the movement, ask your stylist for a razor-cut face-framing bang.
Midriff Co-ords
Even though it's fall and temperatures are dropping, it's never the wrong time to show a little skin. Coordinating tops and bottoms that show off your midriff are all the rage this season. Of course, we blame this trend on TikTok's unique point of view on fashion, but regardless of where it comes from, we think it's great.
People are rocking sets that feature a bold print or graphic. You can dress this trend up by sticking with solid colors and an oversized coat. This look is perfect for those in-between days when it's still warm during the day, but you need a jacket at night.
Pleats
When you don't want to bring out a midi, mini, or long skirt, switch it up a bit with a pleated one. They're versatile pieces that amp up a stylish outfit, and pleated skirts are great for women of all ages. They'll give you confidence in your style and look!
Pleats are great for both comfort and professionalism. If the colder weather hinders your outfit ideas, a pleated skirt could be what you need. You'll look fashionable and office-ready, but you'll also be drowning in comfort without the confines of pants. They look great with various tops, from blazers and blouses to elegant t-shirts and cardigans.
Florals
Spring just went, but don’t put your florals away just yet. You can still wear florals throughout the fall season. Personally, we would wear garments that are fall-colored but use a floral design, like a maroon dress with peach and white flowers.
And just because all the spring flowers are gone doesn't mean your outfit can't be a reminder of all the good things to come. People like flowers all year round. Fall leave designs are nice, but you'll be tired of them before you know it.
Natural Hair
We no longer need to spend hours taming our hair every morning of the cold season. Embracing your natural hair texture, no matter how curly or straight, is the hottest hair trend of the fall.
Bonus: the lack of heating and styling will keep your hair healthy even with the dry air.
Lavender
Every season, there's a new batch of colors that we see in every department store. Last season it was orange; this season, it's lavender! People usually think of lavender for spring, but this season it's making an appearance in fall. Purple is a wonderful color to break up the traditional fall color scheme.
Purple lives somewhere between cool and warm tones, so with the right shade, you could pull it off all year long! Lavender is a good color to wear with denim and also to explore color blocking. You can use lavender with peach and even teal. Or you can wear it from head to toe!
Corduroy
Fall is the ideal time to break out your favorite pair of cords. The velvety fabric is warm and cozy, making it perfect for the colder months. Whether you rock wide-leg corduroy pants, a trendy corduroy blazer, or a classic corduroy skirt, you’re sure to make a statement.
Corduroy is much too warm for the spring and summer, making fall its time to truly shine. It's one look that really hasn't gone out since the '70s and there's a reason for that. Corduroy is just where it is at.
Chains and Hardware
Fall and winter fashion is a great opportunity to take a walk on the dark side of fashion. Yes, chainmail and heavy hardware are in this season. In addition, motorcycle jackets, heavy zippers, and chains are making a comeback in fall 2021. Leather has always been around during the cooler seasons, but it's coming back with an edge this year.
Even luxury brands are using heavy hardware on their bags and fashion this season. This trend resurfaces every few years, so we're not surprised to see it again. Usually, it's not as popular, but expect to see little grunge goblins everywhere this year. If you don't want to go bold, that's ok. Find a black leather purse with a heavy chain strap.
Baggy Boot Cut
Yes, that's right, the bootcut is back. It's like a late '90s daydream come to life. We've revisited flared denim and bell bottoms, and now we're on to bootcut. These jeans taper in at the knee and have a wide leg. Wear them on the baggy side with platforms, clogs, or even sneakers. We're just glad that skinnies are out!
If you've been around since the first time the trend was in style, you can remember just how extreme the bagginess got. This season is a little tamer, thankfully. These jeans are so versatile; you can be boho, you can be grunge, or you can be street-aesthetic. Wear these with a crop top or tucked-in sweater.
All Things Plaid
Plaid is a natural fall pattern. Heck, it’s on most scarecrows! Granted, most of us have plaid in fall colors like red and orange, but this year, trends show that plaid in every color will be “in.” We may just stick with the fall colors since they are some of the best shades.
Plaid is a good look from the fall and through the winter. Of course, you also have to be careful with plaid, too, because you don't always want to go around looking like a lumberjack unless you are into that look.
Clogs
This year, we're ditching the booties and rocking the clogs. Yes, that's right, go to the back of your closet and dig out those clogs from the '90s. The heavier, the better! Bonus points if they're the OG clogs you swapped out for the boots with the fur. These shoes are iconic, and we're glad to see them make a comeback.
Consider getting a few different styles of clogs in different colors. Some have studs, and some are plain. These are the perfect shoes to match with a flared or wide-leg jeans. If you need a reference, watch any Jewel music video. The best ones are backless, so you can just slide in and go. Welcome back, clogs; we totally missed you.
Lob
Say goodbye to the long locks that clung to your neck all summer and create a fresh, easy look with the lob (long bob). The kind-of-short-but-also-kind-of-long cut will be a welcome addition to all of the scarfs and wide-brimmed hats you’ll be rocking as it gets colder.
It keeps your head warm but in a less annoying way, as you won't have to maneuver your hair around your coats, collars, and scarves. It is also relatively easy to maintain when you are dealing with all those fall winds.
High-Waisted Jeans
High-waisted shorts have been our summer staples, but the colder months don’t mean we have to ditch the flattering waistline. High-waisted jeans are just as hot in chilly weather.
They also help slim your waistline so you can enjoy all those delicious fall treats. And with the right tops and accessories, it won't look like you are wearing mom jeans. Just don't tuck in your shirt, please.
Graphic Denim
If bootcut isn't your style, you can also go for straight-legged jeans. These jeans are a little more appropriate for work or dressy-casual situations. These look great cuffed at the ankle with a cute bootie or even sneakers. So, if you're ready to part with your skinny jeans but you're not prepared to commit to baggy denim, these are the jeans for you!
Again, match these with crop tops and baggy sweaters, or even head-to-toe denim! This jean cut seems like it was made for a motorcycle jacket, so this is another opportunity to rock that heavy hardware. But they can also be paired with a blazer or comfy sweater. However, you style them is up to you!
Velvet
Velvet blazers and dresses will keep you on-trend this holiday season. Royal blue, forest green, burnt orange, and ruby red are warm hues that will complement your fall wardrobe.
Wearing velvet totally transforms the vibes of the wearer - it's elegant and reflects light, so you'll easily stand out from the crowd, but in a good way! Velvet is both durable and comfortable as well.
Saturated Solids
People always think that bold colors are reserved for summer only, but we're reclaiming these saturated hues for fall in 2022! So, this fall, be prepared to see magenta, orange, yellow, red, and shades in between. These colors pop with the warm tones already present during the fall season and are a great way to bring a little vibrancy to those grey fall evenings.
You can rock these colors with a coordinating set that wears the color from top to bottom, or you can color-block your outfit by keeping the pants a neutral color or denim and sporting your solids with tops, jackets, and shoes. Keep the jewelry and textures simple and straightforward. An elegant gold pendant necklace or earrings would be perfect.
Knit Sweaters
It doesn’t have to be something holiday-themed! Novelty knit sweaters are just tops that have some kind of design – whether it’s an animal or a unique pattern that stands out. Novelty knit sweaters always go better with solid-color garments, but the color of those items is up to you.
Knit sweaters provide an understated look that is professional for an office setting and comfortable enough to wear around the house. And provided you aren't wearing any patterns like Bill Cosby, you won't have an aged look about you.
Leather
Leather can be uncomfortable, so we suggest waiting until temperatures drop. That way, you can don your leather pants without feeling uncomfortable or sweaty. Alternatively, you could wear a leather jacket.
A leather jacket is bound to make you look at least 50% cooler, just ask the Fonz. Just don't pair the jacket with leather pants unless you want to look like a hardcore biker.
Capes
You read that right – capes! Capes are trending everywhere, from fashion to weddings. If you won’t be hopping on this trend train, you’re not alone. However, if you want to rock a cape, you’ll definitely look chic.
We, of course, mean the kind of capes that Lando Calrissian wears in Star Wars rather than the capes Batman or Superman wears. Superhero capes are still a bit much unless you live on Krypton.
Grunge Platforms
Chunky shoes have been around for a few seasons, but we're throwing it back to grunge-inspired platforms this fall! If you were around for the first grunge movement, you might just have a pair of Doc Martens hiding in the back of your closet! If so, break those bad boys out and get to steppin'. It's not every day you get to take a pair of old shoes out for a spin.
Listen, you don't have to have a pair of vintage platforms to pull off this trend. While it's cool if you do, tons of other imitations are just as rad. They need to be black, they need to be leather, and they need to be cool. These shoes come in all shapes and sizes. You can get knee-high boots or just a regular boot.
Light Liner
Usually, the cooler months are all about darkness, but this year, it’s about the natural look. In makeup, the “natural” look is becoming incredibly popular.
Instead of pulling out the black eyeliner, reach for a brown shade. This color can still open the eyes and create a dynamic look without looking too heavy.
Stunning Hats
Along with printed scarves, stunning hats are in season. A stunning hat is pretty much anything that makes a statement and completes your outfit. Most fashion designers will suggest that you don’t wear a print scarf and a statement hat together, however.
A stunning hat can elevate any look from meh to runway-worthy! The colder weather is perfect for a hat; it'll keep your ears and head warm while giving you a stylish look. When you go out for this fall season and feel like something is missing from your outfit, a stunning hat might be what you're looking for.
School Uniforms
If you're having flashbacks to Clueless, you're not the only one. This trend is straight from a Britney Spears music video, and we love it! Tartan, Plaid, and miniskirts are going to be everywhere this fall. Plaid is usually a fall staple, but you typically see it with a relaxed-fit plaid shirt. Not this season; it's all about plaid skirts.
If you need a little inspiration for this look, watch a few movies like Heathers, and you'll get the picture! To accessorize this look, grab a cute pair of blue-light-filtering glasses and tie your hair up with a cute bow! A bold-colored pump and an over-the-shoulder bag can also put this look over the top.
Puffer Coats
There’s good reason why puffer coats are sold, purchased, and worn each and every year—they’re practical. And with all of the updates that have been made to this classic jacket, it’s easy to understand why they’re a fall and winter staple.
If you live in a particularly chilly fall climate, a puffer coat will likely be your go-to coat for the season and the next. As an adult, it will be easier for you to find a stylish and sophisticated one rather than just the bright pink one you had in grade school.
Animal Print
Any and all animal print! Many fashion experts think that cheetah and zebra will be some of the most common prints. With these designs, you can work it into your normal fall fashion by wearing the prints as an accent item. Many people choose to wear an animal print jacket or belt, and they look absolutely stylish!
Animal print jackets, pants, tops, scarves, and shoes are always go-to fashion items for the fall. You probably don't want to go all animal print or mix-and-match animal prints because that would definitely be too much.
Structured Trench
The perfect way to complement that baggy fashion is a well-tailored structured trenchcoat. Pair this with your midriff coordinating set to keep it a little less business and a little more street. You can find these trenches in several different colors and materials, but stick with khaki or even washed-out leather for this season.
Trenches like these are an amazing throw-and-go. You can take them off when you're indoors and no longer need a jacket, but it's easy to throw on when you're ready to book it. This trend is a little vintage-inspired, so if you need some inspiration, do some digging around late '70s fashion.
Power Red
When we say “power red,” we mean it! This shade is stark and surprising, but it’s meant to be like that, and this shade is easy to wear. You can don a jacket, shirt, or skirt in the shade and then pair it with jeans or something black. Denim is an excellent contrast for power red.
Among the surrounding fall colors, Power Red really makes a clear statement. It's a bold look that is incredibly stylish but isn't too loud. Most people can pull off the look.
Chunky Scarves
Oversized scarves are a seasonal staple. Tossing one around your neck as you run out the door will keep you looking effortlessly chic and incredibly warm. Wool, cashmere, and knit are our favorite fabrics.
Of course, this doesn't work if you live in a warmer climate where people don't really wear scarves but maybe you could wear a lighter one that was extra long or something.
Oversized Sweaters
Since layering is in season, it can be a little tough wearing multiple fitted items. Oversized sweaters work well with layering, which is why they’re also coming into style. Wear an oversized sweater with a pair of jeans, a skirt, or pants, and you’ll be an instant fashion icon.
Oversized sweaters are also slimming and incredibly comfortable. You can go as casual or as elegant as you want with the sweater, too. While you probably wouldn't want to buy a sweater that was way too large for you, you can try on a few different options to find something suitably comfortable.
Colored Leather
Last year was all about fur, but this year, it's dyed leather's time to shine. Leather is always in style, but this season, it's coming with a twist. Pastels, taupes, and subtle neutrals are everywhere. Monochromatic looks with matching shoes, purses, and even pants in coordinating leather are taking over the streets.
If you keep it a little more subdued, this is even a trend you can wear in the office. Understated colors like beige and tan look great with gold jewelry and a cream blouse. Any way you mix and match, it will be fine if you stick with pastels and neutrals. You can even throw on a leather trenchcoat to stay warm in the cooler months.
Natural Lips
Last year, it was all about dark lips, but it’s changing this year. Put away the vampiric lipstick and reach for the lip balm. Natural lips are perfect for this season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear lipstick. Natural and lighter colors can still be used liberally.
The natural shade enhances the appearance of your lips without overpowering the rest of your face. With the natural look, you also don't have to worry about coordinating your lip color with your outfit.
Magenta
The fashion world loves pinks, and magenta is the shade for this season. It’s a rich, bright pink that can be brought to life as an accent color. Hats, scarves, and gloves are all perfect items to wear in this shade. You can pair it with browns and caramel to make your fall outfit pop.
Magenta, like Power Red, is a great way to make a statement. It's an expressive color and you can go all out with it or accessorize with it. You have options, and fall fashion trends like this are the perfect way to mix things up.
Bronze Shadow
This universally flattering shadow is always a good idea, but this fall, it’s the main makeup attraction. It can be worn day or night, is easy to keep simple or make dramatic, and compliments every eye color. There’s no downside to this trend.
Bronze eyeshadow provides the perfect neutral, muted color to go with the fall season. It gives you a healthy-looking glow, even when the weather is a little dreary.
Fringe
Fashion is all about feeling inspired. Fringe is straight out of the days of hippies and the groovy '70s. It's an awesome texture that gives dimension and movement to any look. It sways when we walk and can be used on shoes, purses, pants, and jackets! We're not saying to go full-tilt on the fringe, but a little goes a long way.
This fall, expect to see fringe-trimmed jackets, purses, and boots. You could go with a traditional fringe for a more Western-inspired look or dyed leather fringe that matches your outfit! For daytime looks, we'd keep it pretty simple. But, for hitting a few parties at night, you may be able to get by with a bit more.
Textured Purses
Purse fashion changes year over year. This season is all about textured statement purses! Both big and small, a nice purse can elevate a look. There are tons of textures to explore, like crocodile skin, ruffles, or quilted leather. Whatever the pattern or texture, express your fashion and go bold!
Quilted leather is in this season, especially if it's dyed. Or, you can go with fringe. These days it's all about aesthetics, so consider finding a purse that matches the vibe you're going with for the overall outfit. If you're going retro, you may even consider picking up a vintage bag from a thrift store!
Sock Boots
Sock boots fit snugly around your ankle and can be worn under straight-leg jeans and wide-leg trousers. The best part is that they come in many different shapes and styles. Pointed toes, chunky heels, platform wedges, and playful patterns offer versatility and diversity.
Ever since COVID, we've been embracing comfort a little more, and sock boots are a great way to do that. Walking around in your socks is awesome unless you can be barefoot, but barefoot is certainly not as stylish. But these were an incredible idea, and we're all about them.
Chenille Sweaters
Chenille sweaters and cardigans are making a much-needed reappearance. The soft, textured fabric is thick yet wispy. If you value your comfort, you need this textile ASAP. It’ll tempt you to ditch your scratchy wool and uncomfortable cashmere.
Chenille sweaters might be one of the softest and most comfortable sweaters you can wear, but it does come at a price - and not just money - you'll have to hand wash it, and that also means giving it plenty of time to air dry as well.
Ruching Outfits
Ruching is the way to describe a garment that has the fabric intentionally gathered or bunched up in one area. It can help give the item a little shape or act as a design. Ruching was seen on several dresses and tops, but you can wear it wherever you think it looks best.
Ruching outfits offer the advantage of being slimming because they can accentuate your curves while flattening the look of your stomach. The fall is undoubtedly a great time to get in on this trend if you like the style.
