10 Reasons Matthew McConaughey is the Perfect Southern Gentleman

That face.

That face.

Let’s address the obvious first. A man who looks this good and seemingly doesn’t age clearly takes good care of his body. A Southern gentleman would never forsake his health or hygiene. It’s really no surprise that Matthew was named the Sexiest Man Alive in 2005!

That drawl.

That drawl.

Any man who speaks like Matthew is clearly a true-blue Southern gentleman. This man could read a grocery list and still make knees go weak.

He’s from Texas.

He’s from Texas.

Matthew said it best: “To understand me, you need to understand Texan logic. If you come from Texas, you're 100 percent American but you'll do things the Texan way. We're independent. We've got our own way of doing things. Try to build fences round us and we'll run you out of town. I can go anywhere in the world but my spirit is still Texan and I recognize my own kind. There are no secret handshakes, but when Texans meet there's a special fraternity.”

He loves his team.

He loves his team.

Like any good Texan, Matthew is a devoted Longhorns fan, and all good Southern gentlemen stand by their team. You won’t catch him in any other jersey, but he’s loyal and means it when he flashes the hook ‘em horns.

He’s a family man.

He’s a family man.

In his acceptance speech for Best Actor at the 2014 Oscars, Matthew showed he's a true family man. “To my wife, Camila, and my kids Levi, Vida and Mr. Stone, the courage and significance you give me every day I go out the door is unparalleled. You are the four people in my life that I want to make the most proud of me. Thank you.”

He’s a thinker.

He’s a thinker.

The thing about Southern gentlemen is they’re thinkers. They’re men who like to reflect, brainstorm, and continuously learn. Matthew takes this very seriously. Seriously enough that he has a diary he carries around with him, and he’s has no qualms being open about it.

He cares about more than himself.

He cares about more than himself.

A Southern gentleman would never be destructive or disrespectful. Matthew is considerate and thoughtful, and he has strong feelings about tending to the planet. He once said, “There aren't many things that are universally cool, and it's cool not to litter. I'd never do it.”

He loves and respects his mother.

He loves and respects his mother.

It’s no secret that Matthew basically idolizes his mother. She has accompanied him to many red carpet events, he always thanks her in his speeches, and he’s happy to share advice he learned from her. There’s really nothing more Southern or gentlemanly than that.

He gives back.

He gives back.

Matthew isn’t only concerned with his career and family. Like all Southern gentlemen, he also spends time giving back. He makes a difference through his charitable organization, the Just Keep Livin Foundation, and various other monetary donations to inner-city youth programs and the Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network.

He’s into himself just the right amount.

He’s into himself just the right amount.

Southern gentlemen have this swagger about them. They’re aware of their great qualities, and they are comfortable in who they are and what they want. Matthew definitely has this trait. After all, he’s said he’s his own best friend, and his hero is himself in 10 years. You just keep doing you, Matthew.
