Which TV Shows Are Getting the Chop This Year?

The annual ritual of show cancellations and conclusions brings both disappointment and anticipation for viewers. This year's roster of departing series spans a wide range of genres and networks, reflecting the ever-changing tastes of audiences and the strategic decisions of networks and streaming platforms.

From unexpected cancellations to planned finales, the list of shows getting the chop in 2024 includes both newcomers and long-running favorites. Network television sees the end of several popular series, while streaming platforms are not immune to the axe, cutting short some of their original productions.

Some shows are bowing out on their own terms, having reached natural conclusions to their storytelling arcs. Others face abrupt ends, leaving fans to wonder about unresolved plotlines and character journeys. This mix of planned endings and sudden cancellations highlights the unpredictable nature of the television industry. As we bid farewell to these shows, their departures make room for new series and fresh ideas.

American Auto

American Auto
  • Status:  Canceled
  • Seasons: 2
  • Watch it On: Peacock, Apple TV

American Auto, a sitcom about the auto industry, was renewed for a second season in May 2022 and premiered on January 24, 2023. However, in June 2023, NBC announced that the show would not be renewed for a third season and was canceled after two seasons.

Season 2 averaged 2.3 million total viewers, so we're not completely sure why it was axed. It looks like decent numbers! We're sorry American Auto fans.

Magnum P.I.

Magnum P.I.
  • Status:  Canceled
  • Seasons: 5
  • Watch it On: Apple TV

Magnum P.I., which did well on CBS before being canceled, continues to be a strong draw. Magnum P.I.‘s season five viewership was on par with some of the NBC scripted series, which were renewed for next season. So why aren't we getting a season six?

Some of it had to do with timing and the WGA strike. It's also said that the costs of filming a series in Hawaii are extravagant, so a program needs strong ratings to be kept on air for any length of time. Unless a streaming service comes in and swoops it up, it's the end for Magnum P.I.

The Big Leap

The Big Leap
  • Status:  Canceled
  • Seasons: 1
  • Watch it On: Apple TV

Despite having a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Big Leap drew the smallest audience and the second-worst demo rating among all broadcast TV drama launches.

Fox was forced to cancel the show, though there were plans for a second season. The actors took to social media to express their gratitude for being part of the show and working with their co-actors. It was a show about second chances and chasing your dreams...gone too soon.

High Fidelity

High Fidelity
  • Status:  Canceled
  • Seasons: 1
  • Watch it On: Hulu, Apple TV, Disney+

High Fidelity was canceled by Hulu after one season. The show, which stars Zoë Kravitz as a record store owner who revisits past relationships through music and pop culture, premiered on Hulu in February 2020 to positive reviews.

However, the decision to cancel the show was not easy and came after lengthy deliberations. Speaking to Elle, Kravitz said that Hulu had failed to understand the cultural impact of High Fidelity and how much it had been loved by fans.

Young Rock

Young Rock
  • Status:  Canceled
  • Seasons: 3
  • Watch it On: Peacock, Apple TV

NBC canceled Young Rock after three seasons, ending the comedy sitcom about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's early life. The show covered Johnson's childhood, high school, and college years, featuring wrestling legends and Johnson's own narration.

There are a few possible reasons for cancellation: 1. Exhaustion of younger stories, as Season 3 showed Dewey transforming into high school Rock; 2. The narrative moving beyond "young" Rock into his early WWE career; 3. The show potentially shifting from "Young Rock" to "Prime Rock," outgrowing its original concept.

Yellowstone

Yellowstone
  • Status: Canceled
  • Seasons: 5
  • Watch it On: Paramount+

Fans were shocked when the network decided to cancel Yellowstone after just five seasons, given the show's massive popularity and cultural impact. Reportedly, there were disputes over filming schedules, and Kevin Costner couldn't commit to coming back.

However, the Yellowstone universe is far from over. Creator Taylor Sheridan and Paramount have announced several spin-offs to continue the saga, including 6666 and a yet-unnamed series reportedly set to star Matthew McConaughey. These new shows aim to expand the Yellowstone narrative while maintaining the essence that made the original series a success.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond
  • Status: Canceled
  • Seasons: 2
  • Watch it On: AMC, Apple TV, Sling TV

The Walking Dead: World Beyond was a spinoff of The Walking Dead. However, it had a much shorter shelflife.

The series received mixed reviews, with critics praising the cast's performances but criticizing its pacing. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critique reads, "World Beyond's strong performances and new perspective within The Walking Dead universe aren't enough to make it stand out in an increasingly crowded franchise."

The Artful Dodger

The Artful Dodger
  • Status: Canceled
  • Seasons: 1
  • Watch it On: Hulu, Disney+

The Artful Dodger is a 2023 Hulu miniseries that follows the life of Jack Dawkins, also known as the Artful Dodger, a character from Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. The series is set in 1850s Australia, more than a decade after the events of Oliver Twist, and stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Jack.

The show's devoted fanbase was very displeased to hear it wouldn't be returning for a second season and even set up a petition to try to get a second in the works. As of now, their efforts are fruitless. I guess we will wait and see!

Love, Victor

Love, Victor
  • Status: Canceled
  • Seasons: 5
  • Watch it On: Hulu, Disney+

Love, Victor viewers watched Victor Salazar grow from an insecure closeted teen to a young gay man on the dating scene. But it all came to an end too soon. Hulu announced the Love, Simon spinoff will not have a fourth season.

The show was critically acclaimed, with a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and seemed to be a great success for Hulu. Alas, the show simply "ran out of high school". The show had reached its natural end. It's probably better this way than trying to stretch it into something it's not.

But all things must come to an end, and the fourteenth season will be the last. Part two will premiere in September.

Stranger Things

Stranger Things

  • Premiere Date: 2025 (TBD)
  • Seasons:
  • Watch it On: Netflix

Following the success of the first four seasons, the series creators and showrunners, the Duffer Brothers, signed a multi-year film and series overall deal with the streaming giant back in 2019. Unfortunately for fans, the Duffer Brothers later announced in 2022 that the fifth season, filming currently, will be its last.

Stranger Things will end with its fifth and final season, which is expected to be released in 2025. The brothers said that they had planned out the story arc seven years earlier and originally predicted it would last four or five seasons.

CBS announced last November that Young Sheldon would return for a seventh and final season in 2024. The series follows 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper as he skips four grades and starts high school. Growing up wasn’t easy for this kiddo.

While technically it's coming back for a new season this year, it already wrapped up in May. It's had a good run. If you haven't seen it, it's definitely worth checking out!
