40 Home Decor Trends That Will Rule 2024

Solid Granite Slabs

Solid Granite Slabs

We’ve been going gaga for granite and stone countertops for a while now, so why not bring in more? We’ve been keeping an eye on this trend, trying to figure out if it’s hot…or not. Here’s what we’ve decided. We love this trend! From waterfall kitchen islands to sprawling marble in the bathroom, this trend is timeless and classy.

More often than not, trends are here today and gone tomorrow. So, we usually advise on not going all-in on trendy design unless it’s pretty non-committal. Even though pulling this trend off would be quite expensive, natural elements in design do tend to stay in favor even after decades.

Tortoise Shell Accents

Tortoise Shell Accents

Tortoise shell is a bit of a throwback, but nonetheless totally fabulous! From fashion to home decor, tortoise shell trinkets and trays can bring in a unique and rich look to your overall room aesthetic. The neutral warm tones in the pattern make it a great neutral texture to elevate your style!

This pattern matches well with creams and black, it can be used to tie together contrasting colors as sort of a neutral ground. If you’re a fan of leopard print, you can also use tortoise shell as a way to Segway into leopard! Don’t overuse this texture, a little goes a long way. Your friends and guests will think you’re a designer legend!

Textured Wallpaper

Textured Wallpaper

We’ve spent the better half of the last ten years tearing down wallpaper both verbally and physically, but guess what? It’s back, with texture! You can only do so much with paint, and some spaces need a base layer that incorporates a luxurious texture, setting the tone for the rest of the scheme.

Textured wallpaper lets you play with layers in design. A nice texture used as a base can really elevate a space to a whole other level. We would keep this trend limited to accent walls or hallways, leaving large living spaces open and airy. This look is perfect for a luxurious master bedroom and closet.

Excessively Large Mirrors

Excessively Large Mirrors

There’s something about a giant wall mirror that just makes a room feel spacious and bright. The reflection of light provides another light source that opens up your room. Also, using a tall vertical mirror can make low ceilings seem higher, drawing the eye up the wall to the ceiling.

If all else fails, throw a mirror up and you’ve at least got something. Picking wall art these days can be a challenge. You can never seem to find the right thing, but you can never go wrong with a mirror. In larger spaces, a reflective surface is a great way of adding some design without being overbearing.

Formal Dining Rooms

Formal Dining Rooms

What may seem like an outdated design trend has finally made a return—the formal dining room. Over the last decade, many of us stopped caring about this room. But I’ve always adored it. Hosting dinner parties and holiday festivities requires a formal dining room!

In 2024, we’re restoring this room back to its original glory. The dining room is the perfect room to go all out in your décor. The dining room is the gathering place for your guests and family, so take the time to find the perfect elements to show what you’re all about. Make it comfortable, usable, but still fashionable.

Saturated Reds

Saturated Reds

This year must be feeling hot, hot, hot. Red was huge on the runway, and now, red is popping up in our homes. Intense red colors can be incorporated via an accent wall or just a few accessories here and there around a room.

Red is such a classic color. You can even get year-round use out of the color without anchoring your home’s décor to a specific season. There’s nothing worse than bright summer colors in the middle of winter. Red is classic and will always be daring. We’re happy to see it’s return, and excited to see how people run with it!

Entryway Benches

Entryway Benches

Entryway benches are getting popular for a couple of reasons. One, they give you the opportunity to reflect who you are via decor. Second, they provide a little place for someone to sit and remove shoes before tracking dirt and grime all over the home.

If you have kiddos, an entryway bench is the perfect place for them to put their backpacks when they come home! They’ll never forget them (hopefully) when they’re stashed right by the front door. If you’re a dog parent, they can also make the perfect storage space for leashes, toys, colors and go-bags.

Statement Ceilings

Statement Ceilings

Go wild on that ceiling! No, really! Instead of a plain, old, boring ceiling (or god forbid a popcorn ceiling, ew), put up a design you love. While geometric is a great decision, some are using it as an accent wall by painting it a bright color or even a dark one.

Contrast your wall color with your ceiling. So, if your walls are darker, have a lighter ceiling. If your walls light, paint the ceiling a dark color. Design is all about diversity in colors, textures and pattern. This is a great way to make a big statement in an area that is often left out! If your ceilings are low, we would advise sticking with a lighter color.

Curves

Curves

Don't you want a curvy...home? Well, it's a trend! There's no time for boxy furniture and decor. Curvy or round mirrors, picture frames, and even couches are becoming incredibly popular. Maybe it's due to the extra personality of the piece, but we say drag it out and curve it out!

Angular furniture and décor say… doctor’s office. A home should be comfortable, soft and relaxing! No wonder round is in. Nobody wants to be bombarded with scary sharp corners. We want smooth and soft corners that welcome us home instead of scaring us away. It’s surprising what subliminal effects home décor has on a space.

Custom Scents

Custom Scents

Nothing says luxury like a custom scent for your home. Guests and visitors will come in and ask where you got such a wonderful smelling candle or diffuser. And you can say, “It’s custom!” How nice, right? Ditch the big-box store candles that are full of who knows what chemicals and find a company you can trust.

If you didn’t know, candles are full of formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, limonene, alcohol and esters. Once burned, these chemicals become airborne and can severely affect air quality. Who wants to inhale the same chemicals used to embalm the dead? Not us! Find something better to smell.

Living Herbs

Living Herbs

Don't you always wish you had fresh herbs for your garden? Well, now those herbs can be useful and a decorative element. Try to grow herbs like basil, bay leaves, chives, cilantro, or dill. These are all easy to grow in your kitchen as long as you have a window.

This décor trend is a classic that’s coming back into favor. It’s not only aesthetically exciting, but it’s also useful! There’s nothing better than fresh herbs in a dish. Some herbs are even fragrant while growing. We’re happy to see people taking an interest in reviving this trend, it can be a lot of fun tending those little green plants.

Art Deco

Art Deco

Art Deco has been on the "out" side of decor for a while now, but it's waited long enough for a revival. Since geometric patterns are coming back, this one was bound to do the same at some point. This style uses geometric shapes and strong colors which will be the highlight of decor in the future.

If you’re going bold on your furniture choices, consider a few edits to this trend. Keep your décor simple and straight forward. Since furniture is such a heavy aspect of a rooms feel, having too many geometric pattens can feel a little cluttered. Try to limit this to a few scenes in your space, a little goes a long way.

Bar Carts

Bar Carts

Bar carts got a little boost a couple of years ago, but they didn't really get steam until recently. Nothing says "entertaining" and "hosting" more than a cart filled with delicious cocktails. Even if you aren't really a drinker, you can use it to store glassware. It could also be decoration for fancy-schmancy wine bottles.

Situate these in your living spaces to keep extra barware accessible and at arm’s reach. You never know when your friends are coming over for an impromptu party! Having a fully stocked bar is really impressive and shows that you’re ready for anything. It also really shows that you’re welcoming guests into your space.

Pampas Grass

Pampas Grass

There seems to be a plant that totally takes over home decor from year to year. Last year was eucalyptus and this year it’s pampas grass! Placing these elegant long-stemmed plumes in a floor vase can make an empty corner an interesting feature in your space. Their neutral tones match with nearly everything!

Pampas grass comes in a few colors and texture variations, you can get cream, natural yellow tone, or a even a touch of pink! Cut the stems to best fit your vases. For floor vases, keep the stems long to show off! These beautiful grasses bring a little bit of nature inside. They work great with other natural fibers and textures, but can also be used to break up clean modern spaces.

Staircase Makeovers

Staircase Makeovers

Have you ever thought of giving your stairs a makeover? Probably not, but this trend is popping up on Pinterest. There are so many great options to express yourself. The amount of change depends on how much you want to do -- completely redo the stairs or just add a little carpeting.

There’s nothing more glamourous than walking down a grand staircase to greet your house guests. People are harkening back to a time when stairwells were statement pieces. Expensive, flashy runners paired with dominating art pieces make this trend an elegant way to show that you enjoy the finer things in life.

Mixing Materials

Mixing Materials

Designers and architects are going all out these days and mixing materials in their builds. Mixing new with old has opened up opportunities in design we didn’t previously think about. Mixing these textures give a home more versatility, letting your home express itself in different ways. It's very exciting to see.

Diversity in texture is the name of the game these days. Designers and architects are learning to mix modern elements with natural traditional ones. We love to see this trend in refurbishes to really old buildings who’s bones still stand today. The modern materials bring some creature comforts, but the traditional ones keep the old charm.

Natural Wall Tiles

Natural Wall Tiles
Several years ago, patterned wall tiles hit the seen and people went nuts! The good thing is this trend was really accessible for most anyone. However, because of that accessibility, everyone overused and abused it…causing these tiled to go the way of chevron…A.K.A tacky!Nowadays it’s all about playing with texture over color. Consider neutral wall tiles with a striking texture to give your design some dimension. Texture can draw the eye adjust as well as color and add a layer to design without committing to a color or pattern long term.

Real Plants

Real Plants
Younger generations are embracing real plants to the maximum, and we dig it. Real plants are great design elements that brighten a room, add a little oomph, and could even improve air quality! They go great in corners or blank places. Just make sure to get a plant that works best for the light-level of the area. There’s nothing worse than a half-dead house plant, so make sure to do some good research before you buy. The upside to fake plants is that they’re easy to take care of, and with our busy lives it’s super easy to forget our plant friends. There are plenty of low maintenance houseplants out there, we recommend a snake plant, aloe vera, or dracaena!

Semi-Gloss

Semi-Gloss

Over are the days of matte paint. It’s time to give semi-gloss it’s time to shine. Matte has been huge these last few years, and people are getting bored of it. Now, semi-gloss is making a comeback. It's the halfway point between matte and gloss that people are craving. Regardless of color, give it a semi-gloss coat!

Semi-gloss paint is ultra-durable and holds it’s own against scuffs and grime. A simple damp paper towel will wipe off any unsightly smudges. Also, semi-gloss provides a subtle sheen as a base layer for your design. It reflects a bit of light ever so slightly making your home feel more alive and not so…dull.

Creative Bathroom Design

Creative Bathroom Design

Does your bathroom need a remodel? If so, it’s time to get creative. The standard double vanity and bathtub and shower combo are getting tired. Instead, look for statement mirrors, tiled tubs, and bright and bold accessories to give your bathroom some much-needed TLC.

The bathroom is one of the most used places in a home. We spend a lot of time in there, so it’s time to make it interesting and comfortable. Depending on your aesthetic, you can make your bathroom a room full of glamour, or a relaxing room fit for the French countryside. The key to a great bathroom is counterspace and storage, so get creative!

Large Wall Art

Large Wall Art

The days of gallery walls and statement walls are over! Now it’s all about stellar artwork that spans the whole wall. Set off a whole room with a nice piece that pulls your design together. Having one large piece of art provides an anchor to your space that pulls focus. Consider keeping the rest of the room pretty neutral.

It’s important to remember that this piece of artwork should be tasteful and not overly bold for no reason. Consider a modern piece that uses a primary color, or you could keep it as a simple black and white. This is another opportunity to play with texture if you’re lucky enough to find a piece with some dimension.

Wabi Sabi

Wabi Sabi
No not Wasabi, Wabi Sabi! Put plainly, Wabi Sabi is a traditional Japanese aesthetic that embraces imperfection. So, you could say it’s perfectly, imperfect. This design style isn’t just fun to look at, but it also comes with a meaning. Embracing the world as it is, without striving to make it perfect. Finding beauty in the roughness of life is…well, beautiful. It’s important to practice this design technique with due reverence and research. Make sure to seek out advice from someone who culturally practices this Japanese aesthetic, otherwise, you would be cheapening the meaning behind someone else’s culture…and that’s not okay.

Fun Accents

Fun Accents

The past was about making your home look cookie-cutter, and we're all bored with that. Don't hide your personality. It's your home, and you should show off exactly who you are. Book lovers can make shelving out of old hardbacks, while knitters can hang their own art. At the end of the day, it's your home, and you should be happy in it.

Don’t be afraid to be yourself and show off your talents! Many people say the key to a happy life is to not take yourself too seriously. We’re not saying to lose your inhibitions and go feral, but just loosen up a bit. Get a quirky picture, mix, and match colors and patterns. You don’t have to copy everything you see someone else do… be original!

Commissioned Artwork

Commissioned Artwork

Anyone can go to the big-box store and pick up mass-produced wall art for cheap. But what sounds good about cheap and mass-produced? Nothing! Artwork should mean something to you, especially if it’s in your home. People are ditching their store-bought art for artwork commissioned by local artists…and we’ve got to say, we love it!

It’s always good to support local artists, especially when you can hand down that special piece for generations! So ditch that tired Van Gogh painting everyone has seen thousands of times, just about everywhere. It's better to see the real thing anyway. A real painting in your home will impress guests a whole lot more.

Mid-Century Decor

Mid-Century Decor

For better or worse, the 1960s and '70s are long behind us at this point. Now in 2023, these decades have gone from being goofily retro to seriously vintage. So, don't be surprised if you see lots of '60s and '70s-inspired decor pieces popping up in homes this year.

Some of these mid-century trends we're genuinely excited about. Who doesn't want a little hippie or bohemian twist in charming earth tones? However, even if mid-century decor is making a roaring comeback, let's leave some of the questionable trends (we're looking at you, macrame and wood paneling) in the past!

Floating Bathroom Vanities

Floating Bathroom Vanities

The trend of making your home decor look lighter than air is nothing new, but now in 2024, it's coming for your bathroom. We're predicting that floating bathroom vanities that effortlessly seem to hang in space will become a hot item for trendy bathrooms this year.

While these can look absolutely gorgeous, this is probably not one decor trend you'll want to go the DIY route for. They may look lighter than air, but these things are seriously heavy! If they're not properly and securely installed, everything about your trendy new bathroom could come crashing down at your feet.

Graphic Wallpaper

Graphic Wallpaper

What goes around, comes around, and there's nowhere that's more true than in the world of home decor trends. As crazy as it might seem to some of you above a certain age, wallpaper is making a roaring comeback in homes across the country. However, it's not the '90s nightmare we all experienced in the past.

Graphic wallpaper might seem incredibly corny, but if it's done right, it can actually end up looking really cool. To pull it off, you don't want to go overboard on the wallpaper—creating a single accent wall with a really stunning design or image on it is all you need for this "new" wallpaper trend.

Dark Wood Furniture

Dark Wood Furniture

Dark woods like mahogany and walnut never truly go out of style in the world of home decor, but they are having yet another big moment in 2024. High-quality pieces made out of these are not cheap or easy to come by, but they'll stay gorgeous in your home long after this current trend has subsided.

However, you've got to be smart about what you pair dark wood furniture with. If the rest of the room is covered in equally dark hues, it's likely to make your room look a little small and creepy. Don't forget to add a few pops of color here and there to keep the vibe light and bright.

Colorful Kitchens

Colorful Kitchens

The days of having a sterile kitchen in white and stainless steel are over. These days, folks are starting to see the advantages of having a more colorful, inviting kitchen, and we expect that this trend will continue on into 2024. We could all use a little more color in our lives, right?

Every single surface doesn't need to be bursting with color in your kitchen, but this is definitely the time to think outside the box when it comes to color schemes for this important room in your home. Even painting a single accent wall in your kitchen is probably enough to make it feel like a whole new place!

Small Luxury Pieces

Small Luxury Pieces

Unless you've won the lottery in the last few weeks, you're probably not planning on decking out your entire home in high-cost decor in 2024. As much as we all would probably love to live in a decadent home filled with all sorts of expensive things, that's not in the cards for most of us.

However, buying one or two luxury, big-ticket items for a room in your home is more than enough to make it instantly feel more elegant and refined. You might not be able to afford an entire cabinet of fine china, but a couple of high-quality pieces on display in your kitchen or dining room are all you really need!

Editing Down Decor

Editing Down Decor

Maximalism might have been the hot thing over the last few years, but for 2024, it's all about cutting back on what you've got. But don't fret—it's not like you've got to turn your home into a minimalist monastery. Rather, this trend is about cutting back so that your decor pieces really have a chance to shine.

When creating the look for a room, start with two or three main decor pieces that you want to be displayed front and center. Build up from there, but don't be afraid to pare things back down if your statement pieces are starting to play second fiddle to everything else in the room.

Neutral Fabrics

Neutral Fabrics

Everyone loves a pop of color here and there, but when it comes to the fabrics on your furniture, 2024 is going to be all about going neutral. There are plenty of other ways to incorporate bright hues into your living space, but going neutral with furniture fabric is a good way to make sure it matches with whatever you've got.

However, going neutral doesn't mean that your furniture has to be boring. Choosing interesting (and comfy) textures is one way to keep your pieces interesting without throwing every color of the rainbow onto your furniture. This might be a trend for 2024, but it's a good rule of thumb no matter what the year is.

1970s Aesthetic

1970s Aesthetic

The '70s may have happened decades ago, but they're coming back with a vengeance! Don't be surprised to see decor and accents inspired by this groovy era popping up again in 2024. Thankfully, you don't have to go full 1970s to get in on this trend—keep those macrame tapestries in storage where they belong!

Rather, this trend is more about embracing the color schemes of the 1970s—think lots of neturals and plenty of green! It's all about giving the impression of the decade without making your living room look like a time machine into the past.

Fluted Cabinets

Fluted Cabinets

A little bit of interesting texture never hurt anyone, and that's probably why fluted cabinets are going to be a home decor trend in 2024. This fluted texture has been seen in other places, but this is the year it's time for your cabinets to shine. We think they've more than earned it!

While fluted cabinets probably aren't going to be the centerpiece of any room, it's an easy way to add interest to something that often gets ignored or overlooked. Show your cabinets some love this year in 2024 and give them a unique, fluted appearance.

Herringbone

Herringbone

Herringbone is a pattern that we've seen in fashion and decor before, so it shouldn't be much of a surprise that it's making a comeback—it's a classic style that's almost impossible to get wrong. Considering all that, it's no wonder that people have gone all in on herringbone decor.

While you could deck out everything in your home from top to bottom with this beautiful pattern, it's also easy to add herringbone accents to a room—like a backsplash in your kitchen. However, if you're really in love with it, herringbone tile for your floors is a great way to really let loose with it.

Sculptural Lighting

Sculptural Lighting

A lamp may just be a lamp, but that's all about to change in 2024! This year, we expect that more sculptural-looking lighting is going to be a big hit among home decor aficionados. The possibilities are almost endless, but basically, be on the lookout for lighting that's both decorative and functional.

For those who just want a taste of sculptural lighting, a few dazzling-looking table lamps is enough to get the feel. However, if you get really creative, you can find pieces that can actually be the main source of light for a room. You'll never look at your lamps the same way again!

Gold Plating

Gold Plating

Even if you're not a billionaire, you can still make your home look as good as gold! Gold plating is going to be hot in 2024, but thankfully, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to pull off. Gold-plated decor is widely available these days, even if it's not the real thing.

While adding gold-plated decor can make things in your home look classier, it's also a great way to add in a pop of color without making your home look too bright or busy. You don't need gold from top to bottom to make things look great—a small accent here or there will get the job done just fine.

Decorative Storage

Decorative Storage

Storage is rarely an exciting part of home decor, but that all could be changing in 2024. Gone are the days of plastic tubs and cardboard boxes packed away in the closet—this year, the trend is all about putting your storage front and center for all to see.

Decorative storage boxes get the job done just as well as more practical ones but with the added benefit of being able to be incorporated into a room's design. Whether you go for vintage suitcases or boxes with beautiful prints, decorative storage can turn all of your junk into a work of art.

Curtain Trim

Curtain Trim

Curtain trim might be seen as an outdated trend, but it's coming back in 2024...and these trims have had quite the glow up! While lace designs might be the traditional option for curtain trim, you have many more options available to you these days.

From striking accent colors to intriguing modern patterns, your options are almost endless when it comes to trim these days. Curtains are often an afterthought when designing a room, but they don't have to be. With a little trim, they can be just as beautiful and eye-catching as any other decor in your home.

Asymmetrical Rugs

Asymmetrical Rugs

If you're a fan of rectangles or squares, 2024 might be a rough year for you. Those boring shapes are all out—what's in this year are asymmetrical rugs. While square rugs might seem like the easier choice for placing and styling, it's really not that bad for asymmetrical rugs, either.

When it comes to shapes, the sky is really the limit these days. Whether you're looking for rounded edges or more defined angles, there's a whole world of rugs out there to explore. It's a great way to add interest to a room by literally just tossing something on the floor!
